Sometimes people are so desperate to get six pack abs that they start working out vigorously and then they start complaining about abs hurting too bad. Now you can work on your abs twice a day but then you need to give them a rest the other day. The answer is, yes it is normal if your abs hurt, but it isn't if your abs hurt too bad, to an extent that they hurt even when you cough. My friend had been working all days a week, twice a day. So he wasn't giving muscles enough time to get repaired. This may result in some serious situation.
In conclusion, all muscles hurt after a workout and that's normal. In fact, they should hurt a bit, otherwise it is deemed you're not exercising enough. But in order to make muscles bigger and more strengthful, you need to give them a rest. So it is always good to workout thrice a week, i.e. every alternate day.
