Lifestyle Choices That Impact on Weight Management
Physical activity
When people first think of ways in which to increase their physical activity, their first thought is a trip to the gym or running in their local park, both of which may not inspire! However there are many ways in which to increase energy output through physical activity, and although they may seem like trivial and insignificant lifestyle choices, when added up over the course of a week, these choices could amount to several hundred calories. To increase energy expenditure, the following lifestyle changes can be integrated into the week:
• Taking the stairs rather than the elevator;
• Taking the stairs rather than the lift;
• Spring cleaning the house!
• Getting off the bus early and walking the remaining distance;
• Parking the car further from destination!
Although some of the above choices take longer to undertake compared to their more sedentary alternatives, physical activity is a very important factor in healthy living, helping to attain energy balance whilst increasing muscle tone and reducing the risk of many lifestyle related health complications. There are many 'step counter' apps and gadgets that count the number of steps taken over the course of a day, or number of miles walked (e.g. pedometers). These are geared towards helping and motivating people to increase their daily physical activity levels. The amount of physical activity undertaken is dependent on age.
Eating healthily
Eating healthily doesn't just mean eating the right foods, but eating the right foods at the right time, in the right combination and in the right portion size! Making healthy lifestyle choices means choosing a healthy, balanced diet to attain the right body weight and to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Healthy dietary choices mean:
• Eating a varied diet;
• Choosing healthy snacks;
• Getting the right balance of nutrients;
• Choosing wholegrain/unprocessed foods where possible;
• Eating at regular intervals.
Alcohol intake
Alcohol is consumed in many social settings, both celebratory (e.g. weddings), during work engagements (e.g. entertaining clients) as well as drinks with friends, family in the home or in restaurants and bars. A healthy lifestyle means drinking in moderation and in line with government recommendations, based on gender and health status. Drinking excessively not only increases the likelihood of a positive energy balance and associated weight gain, but increases the risk of many chronic diseases, including malnutrition, head and neck cancer, liver cirrhosis, stroke and mental health problems. It is easy to lose track of how many units have been drunk in a night and over the course of the week, however drinking over the recommended limit can cause serious health problems.
