Our Ever Changing Dietary Needs

Our dietary needs are ever changing throughout our life. As you get older ensuring that you have the right vitamins becomes more and more important. A well balanced diet not only helps to significantly reduce your risks of many different diseases, it also helps to keep your weight down and allows you to feel more energetic. It allows you to live a happier and more confident, better lifestyle.

The more overweight (Obese) that we are, the higher the chance is of contracting a serious health problem such as type 2 diabetes, and heart disease as well as many others.

Over the years it has been found that certain foods have different health benefits that can help you, not only feel better but can help to control your illness.

Foods such as Oily/fatty fish such as, herring, mackerel, salmon, trout and tuna offer us two different types of Omega 3 fatty acids. The fillets can contain up to 30% oil. As well as containing Omega 3 fatty acids they are also a good source of Vitamin A and D.

Non oily fish also contain these benefits but, in much smaller proportions. It is argued that fish can help certain illnesses but, research into this subject has both been able to prove and not prove the benefits of Omega 3 oils.

I believe that fish are good for us and should be included in our diet. As with any food it must be served in the right size portions.

A lot of our foods contain potential health benefits

More needs to be done to educate people on what foods they should be eating and why. As the obesity epidemic grows with such illnesses as diabetes on the rise it becomes more important to understand the importance of consuming the right foods.

With a bit of research you will soon understand the benefits of adding a variety of fruit and vegetables to your diet. Over the weeks you need to be adding more than five different fruits and vegetables and should aim at trying to add as many as is reasonably possible. 'Variety is said to be the spice of life' and it most certainly is with fruit and vegetables.

Understanding the benefits of certain meats will allow you to make a better choice when it comes to purchasing and preparing meat for your children, partner and yourself. Choosing very lean cuts of meat is the key, with poultry and fish being amongst the best for your health and well being.

Cutting down and even cutting out some foodstuffs will prove to be very beneficial even if you do decide not to follow a planned diet. Processed foods should be either taken out of your diet or only eaten occasionally.

Potatoes should be on our minimal list. One small potato is enough and chips should be well off the list. The skins are the healthiest part of them, so a good idea is to boil or bake them in their skins. No need to peel, just wash them thoroughly.

Simply knowing what foods not to eat will be hugely beneficial to your diet.
